Hess’ Landscape Nursery specializes in landscape installations of both newly constructed homes and the upgrading of current, yet outdated, homes. Not only do we work with homes, but we also take on commercial projects as well, many of which we have already completed. Versatility is an attribute of ours which allows us to offer a wide variety of other options as well. Below you can choose the category that suites you most and also gives you a taste of our work.
1.) Traditional Landscapes (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
Tend to be one of our more popular designs, which lean on the more conservative side in nature. Older homes as well as new homes of a Colonial or traditional architecture would utilize this style. The best way to describe this layout would be a neat manicured look which utilizes plant grouping of plants such as, Boxwood, Hollies, Spireas, or formal topiaries.

2.) Naturalistic Style (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
Is a wonderful look for wooded surroundings, cedar or stone homes, or even something as simple as a backyard living area. This style utilizes native trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. The naturalist design can be described as a “loose” or “informal” feel. Another feature that can be considered in this arrangement is boulder outcropping or grouping.

3.) Contemporary or “Free From” Styles (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
Considered by some to be rather busy, the contemporary styles offer that “wow” factor. If you dare to be different, and have a fine taste for the more unusual plants and conifers, you will enjoy this design. We create a spectacular look by mixing colors, forms, and textures. As these plants and conifers mature with age, they become more elegant and beautiful.

4.) Other Unique Designs (click to see gallery of full portfolio)

5.) Recently Completed New Construction (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
Over the past 24 years we have had a wide variety of experience. We have landscaped hundreds of newly constructed homes. As a result this has made us become very efficient, competitive, and professional through this ongoing and challenging endeavor.
In just a couple days’ to a weeks’ time, we can transform your house into a home. There is no substitute for experience when faced with the challenges of dealing with issues such as grading and drainage. All of these factors must be considered when creating an environment that will work successfully and aesthetically for as long as you live in your home.
6.) Renovations (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
This area of landscape and installation is especially rewarding for our company. We obtain great satisfaction from upgrading and improving older homes and even new homes that suffer from overgrown yews, junipers, and other unattractive shrubbery. We replant with the cast numbers of dwarf and genetically superior plant varieties available today. A professionally designed and installed landscape can net an investment recovery of 100% to 200% on the resale value of your home.
7.) Rock and Boulder Scaping (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
There seems to be a growing interest in utilizing boulders for various landscape designs. Through our many experiences, every boulder job is totally and entirely unique. In fact, we do not even know exactly what the end product will look like until it is completed. Our glacial boulders dictate the end product. The outcome of this is it makes for a very unique, one-of-a-kind landscape, which is extremely rewarding to us in the end.

9.) Water Features (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
This segment of our industry is still quite popular. From our experiences, a water feature in your yard will ultimately transform into a passion and hobby that you never would have anticipated.

10.) Swimming Pool Landscapes (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
There are many elements to be considered when landscaping a pool area. These include: walkways, fences, walls, privacy and screening of views. We have been involved with many projects of this nature before and have the experience to design an area that will be useful and aesthetically pleasing.

11.) Hillsides (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
Working in western Pennsylvania, we have landscaped countless numbers of hillsides throughout the years. We have really developed a talent in working with hillsides. Although it is always challenging, we can always find a solution to fit your specific situation.

12.) Bark Mulch Alternatives (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
We get a lot of requests for alternatives to shredded bark mulch. Our bark mulch is a dyed product which holds its color for an entire season. However, it should be freshened up annually.
Our most popular product is a 2 lb lime stone chip we refer to as “red stone”. It is actually a burgundy color. From a distance it resembles our dyed bark mulch. Although it is fairly costly to install, it seldom needs replacing, and therefore you can recuperate your investment in several years. We also use river rock, seashore rock, and have access to other types of stone. Commercial grade edgings and landscape fabric should be used when using these types of product.

13.) Commercial Work (click to see gallery of full portfolio)
